Creative fatigue

Creative fatigue is when an ad loses effect because the same people have seen it too often: CTR falls and costs per result rise.

People scroll past the ad, click-through rate drifts down, and the platform spends more for each click or conversion. It is most common on Meta and TikTok, where feeds show ads to the same audience again and again, but it also affects Display, YouTube and Performance Max.

Where you'll see it

In Meta Ads Manager, watch the Frequency column next to CTR (link click-through rate) and Cost per result over time. Meta also flags fatigue in the ad's delivery status and relevance diagnostics when repeated views push cost per result up. In TikTok Ads Manager, compare frequency, CTR and cost per result by day. In Google Ads, use the Frequency columns for Video and Display, and asset reporting for Performance Max.

Worked exampleA Meta ad at $50 a day

FrequencyCTRCost per purchasePurchases a day
Week 11.61.5%$252
Week 44.20.8%$501

Same spend, half the purchases. Over a week, that gap is 7 purchases.

Do

  • Refresh when frequency and cost per result rise
  • Launch a new ad alongside the tired one
  • Keep fresh creative ready to rotate in

Don't

  • Blame the audience or bid strategy when the creative is worn out
  • Refresh on a fixed calendar
  • Edit a fatigued ad in place; it can restart the learning phase
