AI Max for Search campaigns

AI Max is a Search campaign setting that widens keyword matching, rewrites ad text and picks landing pages using Google's AI, with controls to limit it.

AI Max has three parts:

  • Search term matching extends your keywords to related searches, much like broad match, and can also match without a keyword.
  • Text customization writes headlines and descriptions from your site and assets.
  • Final URL expansion can send people to a different page on your site than the one you set.

You keep the Search campaign's structure and controls, and you can limit AI Max with brand settings, locations of interest and URL exclusions.

Where you'll see it

In Google Ads, open a Search campaign's Settings and find AI Max. In the search terms report (Insights and reports > Search terms), searches found by AI Max have their own match type, so you can separate them from keyword matches. A separate view lists the search terms, generated headlines and landing pages AI Max used. Meta and TikTok have no direct equivalent, since they don't run keyword search ads the same way.

Worked exampleA $5,000-a-month Search campaign

SpendConversionsCPA
Keyword matches$3,50070$50
AI Max matches$1,50020$75

The AI Max traffic converts, but at a CPA 50% higher. Keep it only if $75 per conversion is still profitable.

In the first few weeks

  • Review AI Max's search terms and landing pages.
  • Add URL exclusions for pages that should never be landing pages, such as careers or blog posts.
  • Check generated text against brand, legal or regulated-industry wording rules.
